C'est l'histoire d'une apparition : le 24 juin 1981, à Medjugorje, dans un coin désolé de Bosnie-Herzégovine, la Vierge se montre à six enfants. Depuis lors, elle n'a cessé de leur apparaître, chaque jour et à la même heure, attirant, venus de tous les continents, des centaines de milliers de pèlerins, qui tous demandent son intercession C'est l'histoire d'un pèlerinage : catholiques avec leurs placets et charismatiques en transe se structurent en groupes, avec leurs racles, rites et styles nationaux ; ils sont pris en charge par les franciscains - car dans ce coin de terre catholique avancée en terre musulman et à la frontière de terres orthodoxes, l'Eglise est d'abord celle des moines, plutôt que celles des évêques qui, à la suite du Vatican, ne reconnaissent pas ces apparitions. C'est l'histoire d'une enquête anthropologique : l'objet n'en est pas la véracité des faits, mais les espoirs et attentes qu'ils n'ont cessé de soulever. Plus de dix ans durant, Elisabeth Claverie a observé, participé, suivi les pèlerins, appris le croate, enquêté sur l'événement. Sous sa plume, les apparitions se multiplient : celle d'une Croatie qui a enrôlé la Vierge dans sa guerre d'indépendance, mais celles aussi des charniers des années de plomb antérieures - occupation nazie, puis guerre civile et instauration du régime communiste ; des charniers enfin ouverts et qui permettent que Croates ou Serbes fassent ce deuil longtemps interdit par une histoire refoulée ou officielle. C'est l'histoire, enfin, du personnage de la Vierge : la difficile construction par les Pères de l'Eglise, au fil des siècles, du personnage de la " Mère de Dieu " permet de comprendre qu'à Medjugorje celle-ci puisse être tout à la fois la Mère de miséricorde, la Guerrière ayant mené la Croatie à la victoire, l'Annonciatrice de la fin du communisme, la Guérisseuse de tous les maux. Cet ouvrage, on l'aura compris, est la première tentative de saisie totale d'un phénomène rarement traité par les anthropologues et les sociologues les apparitions.

Proclus of Constantinople was an outstanding pulpit orator who established the rhetoric and rationale for the Byzantine devotion to the Mother of God. In this book, the critical editions of Proclus' most celebrated Marian sermons (Homilies 1-5) provide the point of departure for a far-reaching study of the rise of the Virgin's cult in Late Antiquity. The homilies are supported by a historical introduction to the life and work of Proclus, situating him within the larger religious culture of fifth-century Constantinople. Richly documented chapters explore the symbolism of the incarnation and virgin birth, including the notion of virginal 'conception through hearing,' and the image of Mary's womb as a textile loom wich weaves a veil of flesh the bodiless divinity.
